Another beautiful day in the alps. When I opened the window I saw how they keep the alps so beautifully trimmed. This guy works hard!
As it looked like the best weather day so far we decided to drive to the Rossfeldpanorama Strasse and do some hiking. Here is one of the first vistas we saw.
We pulled over and walked through a gate and over hill and don't you know. I finally had my Julie Andrews moment. Enjoy!
Of course, in the movies, alpine meadows look like flat verdant pastures when in reality they are either bogs or rocks. I had committed to a step before I noticed which I had chosen.
The wildflowers were not to be believed.
We drove around a bit more till we saw a sign for a hike I read about. What the sign didn't say was that to get to the picture at the bottom which was really the beginning of the hike you had to first walk down the mountain to the valley to begin an ascent all over again. The valley floor was the border between Germany and Austria.
This is what faced us for the next 45 minutes.
At one point it looked like we were looking for the Keebler elves.
As you might imagine, this 51 out of shape asthmatic hiking at 5000 feet needed a break or twelve. Rebecca was happy to stop and do push-ups and lunges until I was ready to go again.
One beautiful picture before...
Yes!!! When your heart is pounding 146 beats a minute why not treat it to some cherry streusel and beer!
This was our view while we had snackies.
These huts are all along the hiking trails. You can rent a bed and they provide meals and have showers and laundry and such.
Once I stopped having a series of Larry Ludlow's I had the bright idea to keep going up.
The climb was along a ridge line which I loved.
Rebecca, not so much. But as always, she was a rock. I was brave but the Larry Lulows started again.
I really would have liked to get to the treeline but it looked like it was another mile and so I decided it was enough.
This is the view to my right up above. At least we made it above the snow.
And now the descent. Tell me this doesn't look like where the von Trapps were walking!
Me hard at work. Scouting our next trail. Fortunately, there were only two choices and they both went where we wanted to go. I was so tired I wrote our names in the book inside and misspelled both of them!
This gives you an idea of how steep the descent was and the rocks, when the didn't move, were quite slippery. Add to that, that after a while your feet didn't really go where you told them to so that was an adventure.
The views down were as stunning as up.
We were done with all of our walking by 3:30 and went back to our hotel for some snacks we bought for the room and a glass of wine and a rest before dinner. I found this spot earlier in the day which was beautiful.
Rebecca chose a turkey steak with a wee amount of mushroom cream sauce and späztle.
I had a venison goulash, also with späztle and a bit of sauce and red cabbage. We didn't finish our meals as you might imagine.
Here's a picture of Rebecca picking my entree.
After dinner we drove to the town of Bad Reichall and had a stroll and some ice cream. It's a beautiful spa town with the world's oldest cable car up the mountain. We may or may not go back to try it as it costs $40 a piece.
Then it was home for well deserved sleepies!
